Appupdater provides advanced functionality to Windows, similar to apt-get or yum on Linux. It automates the process of installing and maintaining up to date versions of programs. It is fully customizable for use in a corporate environment.

Privacy and Security Notes

• Appupdater downloads a list of all applications, what you have installed is not sent.
• During an installation the program is downloaded directly from the download website, it is not possible to track what you install.
• Appupdater only sends information that a normal web browser does.
• The one exception to these rules is when an unknown version is detected, it is reported back to expand the repository. This option can be turned off in the config file by setting REPORTING = False.

Repository Rules

If these don't work for you, you can always create your own repository. If you are an application developer and want your app included please see the XML spec above to create your own packages and then contact me for inclusion. These rules are designed to keep the database maintainable and to address the needs of most users. The rules may change at a later date if needed.

You can request a new application using the contact form.

• Only Windows English programs
• Only stable software (no betas)
• Software must be publically downloadable (no passwords, registration, or web forms)
• No plugins unless they have their own installer
• No drivers
• No duplication of Windows Update/WSUS patches
• No spyware or trial versions
• New applications will be added upon request if it meets the above criteria
• New version information will be added through the automated reporting function if enough submissions are made

Developers

First, be sure that you first meet the repository rules listed above. Next, there are a number of steps that you can take to make your application more friendly to Appupdater. Your installer should have a silent install option THAT WORKS. You should be able to run the installer with /S or /silent or some other similar command that installs the application without prompting the user for ANYTHING. This needs to be the case for both new installs and upgrade paths. Additionally, you should use an installer technology that 7-Zip can extract your application's files from. This seems to include most installers, but some seem to create large binary files internally that are not extractable. This might also be related to digital signatures.
